Here's the Story!
The Silk FM team mingled with radio's elite at the annual Sony Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Monday 12th May 2008. These are our industry's equivalent to The Oscars, where BBC and Commercial stations come together to celebrate excellence in radio. It's a mix of experience and youth, expertise and creativity, massive budgets and tight spending.
We arrived in London on Tuesday lunchtime, spent the afternoon relaxing in a beer garden near to our hotel, and then got our glad rags on for what we hoped would be a successful night.
Following the champagne reception and plenty of celeb-spotting, our party of 10 settled down for the awards. A quick glance at the programme told us that our category would be presented in the 2nd half. After a very nervous 4 course dinner, our time had come.
Host Paul Gammacini welcomed Starsailor frontman James Walsh on to the stage to make the announcement. Silk FM were shortlisted in the 'Station of the Year with an Audience of under 300,000' category, alongside BBC Guernsey and BBC Radio Foyle.
After an agonising pause, Silk FM were announced as winners. Lead by Programme Controller Andy Bailey, the team made what seemed like a never ending journey to the stage to accept the award.
